Orthodontic Education 2019

An online, webinar-based orthodontic course?

Orthodontics, like dentistry, is a specialty based on science with a strong craft component. Does an online education format fit it?

The gentleman in the picture is Michael Faraday (in case you do not know who he is, please be ashamed of yourself and google him), holding a lecture in 1856.

Let’s talk about orthodontic education and our vision at GET.

If you think about the setup of a conference or a course nowadays, it is not much different, 157 years afterward.

Sure, we have beamers, smart (albeit breakage-prone) pointers, Keynote and Powerpoint. But the core is the same. A lecturer, an audience, some chairs.

Is it possible that at the time of Instagram, Snapchat and Podcasts, this format stays unchanged? Well, yes and no.

Changing orthodontic education

Yes because we orthodontists are social animals and we like to meet our peers. So venues as an occasion for meeting, confront and, why not, partying, are there to stay.

Furthermore, our profession has a manual component for which hands-on courses will always have their space.

On the other hand, access to basic orthodontic knowledge has to change. I firmly believe that easier and cheaper access is necessary.

I got this epiphany when I was asked to hold a course in Russia.

For those of you who ignored who Michael Faraday was, it is probably necessary to specify that Russia spans from Europe to Asia, with its eastern end that is farther east than Japan, covering a staggering 11 time zones.

For as inflated my self-esteem can be, how can I think that someone would fly 8 or 9 hours for 5 or 6 weekends to attend one of my courses?

The course will run over 6 months, with a webinar published each week, hold by different international speakers. You get access to the whole package.

Each webinar will be divided in few 6-8 minutes separate videos, so to fit best in a busy everyday schedule

The webinars will be accessible for the whole duration of the course, so if you get a lazy week, you can still catch up whenever you want.

The course will cover the broad spectrum of orthodontic knowledge, ranging from growth to treatment with aligners to digitalization of the orthodontic practice.

  • None of us makes any money out of this, for which we could price it very low (200 euros for the whole course). Why did we do it? Some say because we believe in a new model of orthodontic education. Me, I am still asking myself.

we have created the first comprehensive orthodontic online course.
